Frequently asked questions
Can I go directly to the after hours GP clinic?

No, you must always call the after hours GP clinic first. You will then speak to a triage specialist. This is a doctor's assistant or medical student who is specifically trained in using a series of questions to determine how urgently you require assistance.

What if your symptoms are not urgent?
In this case, we will refer you to your own GP, or we will provide you with advice on what you can do yourself to reduce your symptoms.

What if it is an emergency?
If you do require urgent care, we will make an appointment for you to come to the after hours GP clinic.

What happens if I go to the after hours GP clinic without calling first?
You will still be urged to call us. When you call, you will speak to a triage specialist. This is a doctor's assistant or medical student who is specifically trained in using a series of questions to determine how urgently you require assistance.

When should I call the after hours GP clinic?

You should call us when your own GP is unavailable, such as during the evening, night and weekend, and on public holidays.

You should only call in urgent cases requiring immediate medical care.

By urgent, we mean:

  • You have suddenly (in the last hour) developed severe symptoms
  • Your chronic symptoms have suddenly become worse
  • Your child suddenly becomes very ill

These are cases for which you should call the after hours GP clinic.

I am unsure whether or not my symptoms require urgent care. What should I do?

If you are unsure, then first take a look at the thuisarts.nl. This is useful if you don't need immediate care, but would like good advice or want to know what might be going on.

If you are still uncertain after doing so, then call the after hours GP clinic first to discuss it with them.

My child has a fever. Should I call the after hours GP clinic?

If your child has a fever, you can first consult this booklet (in Dutch). It contains information and tips on what to do. If your child does need emergency care, you can contact the after hours GP clinic by phone.

Why must I call first before I can go to the after hours GP clinic?

When you call the after hours GP clinic, you will speak to one of our staff members, the triage specialist. The triage specialist will use a series of questions to determine the degree of urgency of your symptoms.

It will sometimes turn out that you don’t need to come in, and you will receive advice over the phone instead.

If your symptoms can’t wait until the next day that your GP is available, then you will be given an appointment at the after hours GP clinic.

We do our best to schedule appointments effectively in order to avoid long waits at the after hours GP clinic.

If I have an appointment, will I be seen right away?

If the telephone consultation reveals that you need to come to the after hours GP clinic, you will be given an appointment time. Once you arrive, please report to the front desk first so we know you are there. You can then go to the waiting room.

We work according to the principle of urgency, based on who is in most urgent need of emergency care. We do not work on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. It is possible that patients who come in later may be seen ahead of you because their symptoms require more urgent treatment. You may therefore have to wait longer than expected.

The appointment time we give you is an estimate, rather than an exact time.

What does a triage specialist do?

When you call the after hours GP clinic, you will speak to the triage specialist. This is a doctor's assistant or medical student who is specifically trained in using a series of questions to determine how urgently you require assistance.

What is triage?

Triage involves assessing a request for help to determine how urgent it is, and what follow-up care is needed. We use the Dutch Triage Standard (NTS). It is the same standard that emergency room nurses and dispatchers at ambulance dispatch centres also use.

Under the NTS, triage is focused on deciding within a few minutes, and on the basis of limited data, how soon a patient should be seen by a health care provider. The NTS is a guideline that supports the professional in making this assessment.
